I worked the industry from ’92-’02, around the coastal Alabama/Panhandle area. I had my first child in ’03, followed by another in ’05.
Fast forward to today:
We now live in north Mississippi, but own a condo in the same coastal area. We were eating breakfast at our favorite local spot when this couple is seated at the table next to us. The dude starts berating the waitress as soon as they sit down, while his wife just looks at the table the whole time like she doesn’t know what’s going on.
She orders a cheeseburger, and he orders a fried shrimp basket. As soon as the food comes out, he immediately yells at her to take it back, that is was cold. We were watching the whole thing, and he never even tried the food. She takes it back, and in a few minutes, brings out a fresh plate. She apologized and went back in the kitchen.
He jumped up and followed her INTO THE KITCHEN, and yelled at the top of his lungs that he was never coming back to this restaurant, blah blah. At this point, she was almost in tears and asked what she did wrong.
He said “You didn’t bring me any butter!!!!.”
She said she didn’t know he would need butter (for a cheeseburger and popcorn shrimp???), and he yelled “You didn’t ask me!!!”
To top it off, after he had run the waitress to death, they both dropped their heads and prayed over their food.
That’s when my husband lost it.
The four of us were completely mortified. My two boys who are now 13 and 11, could not believe how this man was treating this poor girl, and then praying. We got our check, and before I could get to the waitress, my husband and boys had already pulled her aside and were comforting her. When I got to her, I told her I hoped he prayed for a new attitude.
I’ve been out of the business for a long time, and am just an old wife and mother now. But by golly, my children and husband have the utmost respect for their servers… and that’s because of me!
